Dario Argento’s 1975 Profondo Rosso is an operatic thriller that frequently wanders into moments of disarming humanity. The gift of the giallo, a mid century Italian genre of exuberantly stylish - and gruesome - films, was in conjuring glamour from pulp. Our Profondo Rosso was brought to life from the remains of our holiday excesses. In the early days of the new year, after the fever quiets down, we cut and tear away scraps from inside our waste bins to make collages. Most are given as cards throughout the year, but six of the compositions fit together like a puzzle. Or a giallo.Cherry with carved outlines in porcelain and inky black. This rug is from our Profondo Rosso rug collection. The transfer looks gorgeous in motion, with those deep reds and shadowy corridors popping off the screen. It’s the kind of film where the operatic set pieces linger, but the quiet human moments hit just as hard, which is rare for a thriller from that era.

The scene where the pianist’s hands are severed still haunts me days later, but it’s the quiet, human moments between all the operatic violence that stuck with me most. This transfer captures the giallo’s lurid colors beautifully, and the pacing lets those disarming pauses breathe exactly as Argento

Sofia ★★★★★

The way Argento lets the story pause for those quiet, human moments between the killings is what makes this one stick with you long after it’s over. The operatic tone is there in every frame, but it never overshadows the genuine unease.
